Wintertime means hot chocolate, yummy soups, and maybe snow. It can also mean coughs, fevers, and all kinds of other not-so-fun sickness-related ailments.  Even though I do my best regarding prevention, like making healthy food and ensuring my kids get enough sleep, we still catch at least one cold every winter. Here are my top 5 wintertime herbs for kids:

Elderberries

Many moms are no strangers to elderberries. Elderberries have antiviral properties that can be helpful during illness. They’re a great herb to take before, after, or during an illness. Most kids love the taste of elderberry syrup, so it’s easy to get it down.

Thyme

This common kitchen herb is an amazing plant to use in the winter. Thyme has well-researched antibacterial properties. A cup of thyme tea can be super helpful during congestion, and thyme tea with honey (no honey under age 1) is extra tasty.

Chamomile

This humble little flower packs a mighty punch when it comes to gastrointestinal discomfort. A cup of chamomile tea can soothe upset tummies in kids and adults alike. In times when fevers are accompanied by nightmares, try a cup of chamomile tea.

Lavender

Lavender is known to promote restful sleep. Although lavender tea isn’t the tastiest, it can be combined with chamomile or taken as a glycerite. Glycerties are alcohol-free, sweet-tasting extracts that usually have a kid-approve taste. If you’ve never tried lavender hot chocolate, I recommend you do! If you need some help unwinding before bed, turn to lavender.

Sage

The first herb I turn to for sore throats is garden sage. A gargle of sage tea can be so soothing!  Sage is a very “drying” herb, so it’s great for congestion!
